New Brochure Shows Importance of Social Security to African Americans

Did you know that, at 77 years old, Social Security remains one of the nation’s most successful antipoverty programs!   In 2010, Social Security kept over 20 million people out of poverty, including 1.1 million children.

Although the rules for determining Social Security benefits are the same for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, African Americans uniquely benefit from the family-oriented structure of the program based on certain characteristics.

Nearly half (47%) of all African-American Social Security beneficiaries receive  benefits for something other than retirement, compared to only 28% of whites.  Any proposed changes to the Social Security program will have an especially profound impact on earners between the ages of 21 to 45.

The Policy Institute will host a free Webinar to mark the release of a new informational brochure, “Why Social Security Matters to African Americans” and to explore how members of the African American community—particularly young professionals—view the Social Security program, and what we can all do to keep Social Security strong for future generations.  Questions to be explored include:

  • Is Social Security just a retirement program?
  • Is the program going broke?
  • What proposed changes – if any – are lawmakers planning for Social Security? How would that affect me and/or my family?
